Veterans Filmmaking Academy

vfa banner

SFF has collaborated with Project Rebirth to bring a unique filmmaking project to Sarasota. One of Project Rebirth’s programs, Project Cohort, works with post-9/11 veterans returning from Afghanistan and Iraq. The Veterans Filmmaking Academy is an opportunity for 6-10 local veterans to learn about documentary filmmaking and work with industry professionals. The course instructor and veteran students will create, direct and produce a short documentary to world premiere at the 2017 Sarasota Film Festival.

Based in New York City, Project Rebirth is a resilience resource for all who serve community & country. Its educational tools and program models are teachable, adaptable and easy to scale, allowing program participants to share them when they return to their own communities.

Sarasota resident Jeff Garner, Sgt. First Class, U.S. Army, will serve as the academy's peer leader, ensuring the veterans in the filmmaking class meet milestones and timelines. Jeff received specialized training with Project Cohort last summer in Austin, Texas.

Sarasota production company Triforce Pictures is teaching the class the technique portion of documentary filmmaking. Since 2005, Triforce has been specializing in a wide variety of visual media services such as TV commercials, social media videos, short and full length feature films, corporate videos and web series.

Jason Benjamin, director of SUITED (SFF 2016), and sound operator on HBO's GIRLS will teach the veterans the theory behind documentary filmmaking. Jason received a BA in sculpture and an MFA in documentary film at The City University of New York.

At the conclusion of the course, the veterans and Triforce Pictures will shoot, produce an edit a short documentary pertaining to a local veterans issue. Class members will participate in a red carpet event at the film's 2017 World Premire and be part of a VIP reception.
